Edinburg, TX—6/27/2011—Doctors Hospital at Renaissance recently announced its new partnership with the Boston-based Joslin Diabetes Center, the global leader in diabetes research, education and care. The Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance will offer the latest advances for treating diabetes and its complications as well as patient education and support services.

Joslin’s Affiliated Programs initiative makes Joslin’s programs, services and expertise available to premier hospitals, healthcare systems and physician practices across the United States. Joslin has affiliates in 44 locations—with 38 national sites and three skilled nursing facilities in 17 states, plus three international sites. The Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is located at 5525 Doctors Drive in Edinburg, Texas. This multidisciplinary program includes the services of an endocrinologist, a registered nurse, and a registered dietitian.
The medical director, Dr. Marcel Twahirwa is a resident of Rio Grande Valley. He graduated from La Universidad de Montemorelos, Nuevo Leon, MX. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at New York Medical College, Metropolitan Hospital, New York, NY. In addition, he completed a fellowship program in Diabetes, Endocrinology, & Metabolism at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. He received his Board Certification in Internal Medicine in 1996 and his Board Certification in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism in 2000.
Dr. Twahirwa has been taking care of Valley Diabetic Patients since he moved to South Texas in 1998. He practiced at Diabetes & Endocrine Center from 1999 until May 2011 when he accepted the position of Medical Director at Joslin Diabetes Center affiliate Doctors Hospital at Renaissance.
Other healthcare providers at the Joslin Center include Sandra Trevino, FNP, CDE, and Rachel Villarreal-RD, CDE. Sandra is a resident of Edinburg and has been a Family Nurse Practitioner since 2001. She received her Masters of Science in nursing from UTPA in 2001, her Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 1995, and became a Certified Diabetes Educator in 2004. Rachel is a resident of Edinburg and received her Bachelors of Dietetics from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ in 2003. She served in the Army as a dietician for 3 years and has been a Diabetes Educator for 4 years.
In 1995, eight forward-thinking physicians in Edinburg, Texas embarked on a remarkable journey that continues to this day.
